GAUGE:

18 sts = about 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

    skp Slip 1 as if to knit, knit 1, pass slip stitch over knit stitch - 1 st decreased.

NOTES:

    1. Entrelac knitting consists of rows of triangles and blocks that are worked in short rows. Short rows are rows that are worked over a portion of the sts in a row, leaving the remaining sts unworked. To work short rows, the pattern instructions will tell you to 'turn' before you reach the end of the row.
    2. When knitting in the rnd on double pointed needles (dpns), your sts need to be divided fairly evenly onto the needles. If you are working with a set of 4 dpn, your sts should be divided among 3 needles. If you are working with a set of 5 dpn, your sts should be divided among 4 needles. The total number of sts will not always be evenly divisible by the number of dpns that you are using - this is not a problem! Simply divide your sts as evenly as possible, you will still create a symmetrical 'tube' of knitting.
    3. Slip sts as if to purl.

BERET
Ribbing
With circular needle and A, cast on 80 sts. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
Rnds 1-12: *K1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 13 (turning ridge): Purl to end of rnd.
Rnds 14-25: *K1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Fold ribbing, along the turning ridge, to the inside so that the cast-on edge is behind your needles and the turning ridge is at the bottom of the piece.
Joining Rnd: Insert left needle into first loop from cast-on edge; with right needle, knit the loop together with next st on left needle; *insert left needle into next loop from cast-on edge; with right needle, knit the loop together with next st on left needle; rep from * to end of rnd.

Borders
The border is a pattern called Tanbark. To begin, take the center entrelac panel and pick up approximately 217 stitches with Color B. The RS of the entrelac should be facing you with the long edge facing you. The exact number is not critical, but it must be an odd number. The border pattern is very dense, so you need enough sts to make the panel long enough. It is helpful to place a marker every 20 stitches to keep track of the pattern.
Row 1 (WS): p1, *sl1 wyif, p1; rep from *
Row 2: p1, *k1, p1; rep from *
Row 3: sl1 wyif, * p1, sl1 wyif; rep from *
Row 4: k1, *p1, k1; rep from *
Rep these 4 rows for 3 inches or 34 rows. BO. Work the pattern for three inches (34 rows) and BO.
Pick up 217 stitches on the other side of the center panel and knit in Tanbark as for the first panel. Knit a panel of Tanbark on the outside edges of the two remaining panels.
Block
Do not press. Wash gently and pin out without stretching the knitting. When dry the entrelacs should be somewhat three-dimensional. The entrelac will pull up with the border, which is dense.

Finishing
Seam center and side panels. Knit the top and bottom in the Tanbark pattern, picking up approximately 193 stitches at each end and working 3 inches (34 rows).
With Color B, single crochet around the outside edge of the afghan.
Change to Color C and triple crochet around the outside edge once.
Change to Color D and triple crochet around the outside edge once.
Change to Color A and double crochet around the outside edge once

Entrelac knitting has experienced a revival with the advent of long-repeat self-striping yarns. This entrelac hat, the Kaleidoscope Tam, shows why: As the colors change along the length of each strand of yarn, every block of knitting takes on its own personality. The corrugated rib band provides a jaunty base for the woven diamonds, and a whimsical stem on top finishes the look.

  • Yarn: Worsted-weight yarn (shown: Knit One Crochet Too Paint Box, 100% wool, 100 yd.)

Sixth Tier – positioning the first pocket

With MC and following the instructions for the Second Tier, work the first block stopping at **.
Rows 3-9: Repeat Rows 1 and 2 three times, then repeat Row 1 once more.
Row 10: K1, bind off 4 sts, slip last st back to left needle, ssk, turn.
Row 11: P1, cast on 4 sts purlwise, p1, turn.
Row 12: K5, ssk, do not turn.
This completes the first block in the 6th tier .Work 3 more blocks as given for the 2th tier.

Seventh Tier – positioning the second pocket

With CC and following the instruction for the First Tier, work the Left Side Triangle, then work Rows 1-9 of the first block.
Row 10 (WS): P1, bind off 4 sts, slip the last st back to the left needle, p2tog, turn.
Row 11: K1, cast on 4 sts, k1, turn.
Row 12: P5, p2tog, do not turn.
Complete next 2 blocks and the Right Side Triangle as instructed for the First Tier.

Eighth Tier

Work same as the Second Tier.

Ninth Tier

Work same as the First Tier.

Top Triangles – Last Tier

*With RS facing and MC, pick up 5 sts along the side of the triangle of the tier below (together with the 1 st already on the right needle there are 6 sts on the right needle), turn.
Row 1 (WS): P6, turn.
Row 2: Ssk, k3, ssk, turn.
Row 3: P5, turn.
Row 4: Ssk, k2, ssk.
Row 5: P4, turn.
Row 6: Ssk k1, ssk, turn.
Row 7: P3, turn.
Row 8: Ssk, ssk, turn.
Row 9: P2, turn.
Row 10: K1, ssk, turn.
Row 11: P2, turn
Row 12: Slip 1, ssk, psso – 1 st remains, do not turn.
Repeat from * 3 more times cut the yarn and pull through the last st.

FINISHING

Weave in ends.
Block the garment focusing on the edges to square sides; you might need to stretch the bottom a little more to match the length of the top of the garment. 

Lining - simple version
Measure the finished knitted item.
Cut the lining fabric according to the final size of the knitted item – allowing a little extra for the seams.
Fold the lining fabric in half with RS together and sew side seams using sewing thread.
Fold knitted item in half with RS together so that cast on and top edges meet and sew side seams using the knitting yarn.
Turn the knitted case so the RS is facing. Insert the lining fabric inside the case and pin down the fabric to the wrong side of the knitted item with wrong sides together. Fold the seam allowance at the top of the case to match the edge of the knitted item and sew together. With sewing thread, sew fold at bottom of lining to fold of knit piece.
Insert a zipper and sew in place.
With a sewing thread sew around the outer openings to create little pockets, (sewing together the knitted item and the lining fabric - take extra care not to sew to the other side of the case by mistake).

Lining - advanced version (internal divisions)
The internal divider of the lining is approximately 1 inch shorter than the full height of the case.
Measure the finished knitted item.
Cut the lining fabric 8 inches longer than the final height of the knitted item, allowing a little extra on all sides for the seams.
Fold the lining in half with WS together (A to A, B to B) (see diagram for guidance) – sew a line at the top of the fold to secure the fold, sew a second line 4 inches away from the center fold through both thicknesses of lines AB to create the internal divider.
Fold the lining fabric with RS together, with the center fold inside and seam AB at bottom, sew side seams together through all thicknesses. The double thickness of fabric from the center fold to seam AB is the center divider of the lining.
Fold knitted item in half with RS together so that cast on and top edges meet and sew side seams using the knitting yarn.
With RS of knitted case facing, insert the lining fabric inside the case and pin down the fabric to the wrong side of the knitted item, making sure the center divider is in the middle of the case. Fold the seam allowance at the top of the case to match the edge of the knitted item and sew together. With sewing thread, sew line AB to folded edge of knitted piece.
Insert a zipper and sew together.
Surprises
With a sewing thread sew around the outer openings to create little pockets, (sewing together the knitted item and the lining fabric - take extra care not to sew to the other side of the case by mistake).

Materials
MC - 2 - 50 gr. balls Crystal Palace Cotton Twirl

CC - 1 - 50 gr ball Crystal Palace Aria
Size 5 and 7 - 16" Crystal Palace Bamboo circular needles
Size 7 Crystal Palace Bamboo 6" double point needles
1 Stitch marker
1 button (optional)
Gauge: 18 sts = 4" in garter st with size 7 needle and Cotton Twirl
Instructions Using smaller circular needle and MC, cast on 96 sts.
Join, taking care not to twist sts and work in K1-P1 ribbing for 1-1/4".
Change to larger needle and knit one round, decreasing as follows: *K4, K2 tog* all around - 80 sts.
Change to CC and begin pattern
Entrelac Step 1 - CC
*(K2, turn) twice
(K3, turn) twice
(K4, turn) twice
(K5, turn) twice
(K6, turn) twice
(K7, turn) twice
K8 once - do not turn*.
Repeat between * around (10 triangular sections formed). Cut yarn.
Mark this side of work as right side.
Turn work and continue with wrong side facing and MC.
Entrelac Step 2-MC
(Pick up and purl 8 sts along edge of triangle on right needle. Turn, K8 and turn.
*K7, K2 tog, turn, K8.* )
Rep between * until all 8 sts of triangle on 1st row have been worked. Do not turn after last K2 tog.
Now repeat between ( ) around - 10 rectangles are formed. Cut yarn.
Step 3-CC
Turn work and repeat step 2, but pick up and knit on rs of work
Step 4-MC
Turn work and repeat step 2, picking up and purling on ws of work
Step 5-CC
Turn work and with right-side facing, continue as follows:
*Pick up and knit 8 sts along edge of rectangle and turn.

Below is the pattern I ended up creating.

Size: Women's small-medium (I wear a size US 7.5 shoe. The circumference of my foot at the ball is 8.5 inches. My foot length is 9 inches)

Gauge: 8 stitches per inch

Materials: Trekking XXL 104, 5 bamboo DPNs in US size 1 (2.25mm)
Note on Trekking:

Some Trekking yarns will make a beautiful entrelac pattern without any planning or forethought. You can just pick out the yarn and start knitting. To do this, make sure you use a colorway with very long color blocks. Other Trekking yarns with shorter color repeats will create stripped entrelac squares. The other option is to use two solid colors of sock yarn and alternate.

Worked toe-up with a short row toe and a short row heel. I use Wendy's pattern as a reference.

Begin by casting on 32 stitches using a provisional cast-on.
Knit across cast-on stitches. Purl back across.

Begin short row toe:
Row 1: Knit to last stitch, wrap last stitch with yarn in front as if to purl, slip last stitch from left needle to right. Turn work, slip first stitch (the one you just wrapped and slipped) onto right needle.
Row 2: Purl to last stitch, wrap last stitch with yarn in front as if to knit, slip last stitch from left needle to right. Turn work, slip first stitch (the one you just wrapped and slipped) onto right needle. You now have one wrapped stitch on each end of the needle.
Row 3: Knit to stitch before the wrapped stitch (second to last stitch), wrap stitch with yarn in front as if to purl, slip wrapped stitch from left needle to right. Turn work, slip stitch (the one you just wrapped and slipped) onto right needle.
Row 4: Purl to stitch before the wrapped stitch (second to last stitch), wrap stitch with yarn in front as if to knit, slip wrapped stitch from left needle to right. Turn work, slip stitch (the one you just wrapped and slipped) onto right needle. You now have two wrapped stitches on each end.

Continue repeating rows 3 and 4 until you have wrapped 8 stitches on each side and have 16 unwrapped stitches in the middle. Now you will begin picking up the wrapped stitches, beginning with a knit row.

Picking up wrapped stitches and make a toe box:
Row 1: Knit across 16 center stitches to the first wrapped stitch. Pick up the wrap, knit the stitch, pass wrap over knitted stitch. Move yarn to front as if to purl. Slip next stitch, turn, slip stitch back to right hand needle, purl to first wrapped stitch.
Row 2: Pick up the wrap, purl the stitch, pass wrap over knitted stitch. Move yarn to front as if to knit. Slip next stitch, turn, slip stitch back to right hand needle, knit to wrapped stitch.
Continue repeating rows 1 and 2 until all wrapped stitches have been worked. You know have a toe box and have just finished a purl row.

Knit 16 stitches onto your needle, pick up a new needle and knit the next 16 stitches onto the new needle.

Unzip the provisional cast on and place these stitches onto two needles, distributed evenly. You may need to pick up one stitch. Knit across these 32 stitches. You now have a total of 64 stitches on your needle.
Knit one row even.

Next row, decrease 22 stitches as follows: k2tog twice. (k1, k2tog) repeat 20 times. [42 stitches on needles]
Knit one row even.

Entrelac Base Triangles:
Each base triangle is worked across a total of 6 base stitches. After each row, turn the work.
Row 1: (RS) K2, turn
Row 2: (WS) Slip 1 stitch purlwise, purl 1, turn
Row 3: (RS) K3, turn
Row 4: (WS) Slip 1 stitch purlwise, purl 2, turn
Row 5: (RS) K4, turn
Row 6: (WS) Slip 1 stitch purlwise, purl 3, turn
Row 7: (RS) K5, turn
Row 8: (WS) Slip 1 stitch purlwise, purl 4, turn
Row 9: (RS) K6
Repeat these 9 rows across the remaining stitches. You will end up with 7 triangles. Distribute triangles across 4 needles. Needles 1 and 2 will be the instep stitches. Each will have 2 triangles. Needles 3 and 4 will be the heel stitches. Needle 3 will have one triangle and needle 4 will have 2 triangles.

Entrelac Squares Set 1
With wrong side facing, pick up 5 stitches along the side of the first triangle, starting at the tip and working down to the base. Purl 1 stitch from the adjacent triangle. Turn. This section may seem very awkward, but it will work out.
Row 1: Knit 6, turn.
Row 2: Purl 5, p2tog, turn.
Continue repeating two rows until all 6 stitches adjacent triangle have been purled. Pick up 5 stitches down the side of the triangle. and repeat Entrelac Square Set 1 until all triangles have been consumed and you have 7 squares.

Entrelac Squares Set 2
With right side facing, pick up 6 stitches along side of entrelac square. Knit one stitch from lefthand needle. Pass the 6th picked up stitch over the just knit stitch. Turn.
Row 1: Purl 6, turn
Row 2: K5, slip 1 stitch from lefthand needle to right, psso. Turn.
Continue repeating two rows until all stitches from left hand square have been consumed.
Continue alternating each set of squares until the sock length is approximately two incehs shorter than your foot length, end by completing Set 2.

Heel
Purl back across 6 stitches.
Pick up 5 stitches purlwise, purl 1 stitch from left needle.

End Triangle:
Row 1: Slip 1 stitch knitwise, k1
Row 2: Slip 1 stitch purlwise, p2
Row 3: Slip 1 stitch knitwise, k3
Row 4: Slip 1 stitch purlwise, p4
Row 5: Slip 1 stitch knitwise, k5
Row 6: Slip 1 stitch purlwise, p6
Row 7: Slip 1 stitch knitwise, k6, k2 tog
Row 8: Slip 1 stitch purlwise, p6, slip 1, p2tog, psso

Repeat across needles 3 and 4. You will have 6 square stitches and 24 end triangle stitches. Put all 30 stitches and on one needle. You will also now have 2 squares on needle 1 and 1 square on needle 2. Now you will begin the short row heel by repeating the process for a short row toe.

After making a short row heel, pick up 5 stitches purlwise down side of adjacent square.
Work Entrelac Squares Set 1 across the three squares on needles 1 and 2. Contine and consume the first 6 stitches off the needle containing the heel stitches. If there is a gap before the 6 stitches, pick up 2 stitches and k2tog them together on row 2 of entrelac square.

Now you are at the heel stitches.

Base triangles:
Row 1: P2tog, p2tog
Row 2: Slip 1 knitwise, k1
Row 3: P3
Row 4: Slip 1 knitwise, k2
Row 5: P4
Row 6: Slip 1 knitwise, k3
Row 7: P5
Row 8: Slip 1 knitwise, k4
Row 9: P6
Repeat base triangles three times.

You have now knit all the heel stitches. Rearrange needles if you need to.
Continue in entrelac until leg is the desired length. Knit a set of end triangles all the way around the leg [56 stitches].
Knit 1 round, increasing 8 stitches evenly.
K2, p2 rib for 1-2 inches. Bind off loosely.
